Cosmetic Sclerotherapy: Post-Treatment Instructions:
For best results, please follow the instructions listed below. Remember that the veins will look red and inflamed or blotchy for a few days after each treatment and that the full response to a cosmetic sclerotherapy treatment takes about 30 days to see.
To obtain optimal results from your sclerotherapy treatments we recommend wearing your compression stockings. We will apply some dressings and your stockings immediately after the treatment is completed. Wear the stocking continuously until the following morning when the stocking and any dressings can be removed. Showering and shaving can resume that first morning. Then wear the stockings during daytime hours for at least another 3 days.
There are no limitations on activity after treatment. Travel, exercise, and swimming are unlimited. Sun exposure is permitted but you should use 30-50SPF sunblock.
You may take all of your medications as you usually would.
Pain or discomfort after treatment is not common. But if you do have discomfort, you may take whatever pain reliever you prefer as long as you have no medical problems or allergies that prohibit pain medication.
In the weeks following your treatment, you may notice some black spots over some of the treated veins, or some tender lumps under the skin, or some brownish skin darkening. This is very common and not at all serious. It is often due to a common issue we call “trapped blood” and is just a little pooling of blood inside a treated vein. There is no cause for alarm.
However, it is best for us to treat this within a week or so to avoid any skin discoloration. We call this treatment an “aspiration” which only takes a few minutes in the office, so please contact us if you think you need this.
Please do not hesitate to contact our office if you have any additional questions or concerns. It is typical that additional treatments may be necessary so feel free to call if you would like another treatment scheduled.
