FAQs:

What does Cosmetic Sclerotherapy Treat?

Dr. Cohen offers a very safe and effective treatment called cosmetic sclerotherapy which can easily and safely get rid of these unsightly veins and restore your self-confidence.

How does sclerotherapy work?

During sclerotherapy, a very tiny needle is used to inject a medication into these spider veins which makes them fade and disappear. There will be many injections during each treatment – but the needles are very small and easily tolerated. The medication we use is an FDA-approved sclerosant called Asclera which works by destroying the cells that line the inside of the veins, causing the veins to disappear. Asclera has been used safely and effectively for decades and is well tolerated.

How do I know if I am a good candidate?

Those with various levels of spider veins could be eligible for treatment.

Larger, bulging “varicose veins” can also be treated with sclerotherapy -- but these are often associated with an underlying vein problem known as venous insufficiency. Often, venous insufficiency should be treated first to optimize the response to cosmetic sclerotherapy. This can be discussed during your consultation.

We will not perform sclerotherapy if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant. Treatment during breastfeeding is possible but with some precautions.

What results can I expect?

Typically, a single treatment will reduce spider veins by about 70% gradually over the course of 30 days. It is best to avoid re-treatment of veins before these 30 days are up, although treatment of other untreated veins can be done anytime sooner. Depending on how many veins you have, how your particular veins respond to the treatment, and what level of cosmetic improvement you are shooting for, the number of treatments you might need cannot be completely predicted.

Once a spider vein disappears it will not come back. But sclerotherapy does not prevent other spider veins from developing. It is very common for patients to return now and then.

How many treatments will I need?

Most patients get a handful of treatments over a few months for desired results. We will try to give you an estimate of how many treatments to expect during your initial consultation.
